To help Arizona’s small and diverse businesses scale their operations and secure high-value contracts, Salt River Project and Arizona State University’s J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute are hosting the Small Business Academy powered by SRP, a six-week program launching on January 28 with workshops held every Tuesday evening. The program will culminate with a final pitch competition on March 4.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Arizona’s economy, and through the Small Business Academy, we’re providing the resources, mentorship and opportunities they need to thrive,” said Erika Castro, Supplier Diversity Manager at SRP. “This program builds on our commitment to supporting diverse suppliers and creating a more inclusive and prosperous Arizona.”

The Academy will cover key topics such as managing finances, meeting insurance requirements, boosting cybersecurity, scaling operations and perfecting a pitch. Workshops will be held at the SRP Heritage Center in Tempe and Skysong 1951@SkySong in Scottsdale, offering participants access to expert mentorship, networking opportunities and invaluable resources tailored to their business needs.

SRP is actively seeking participation from businesses in key industries critical to its operations, including distribution, custodial services, engineering, substation construction, electrical equipment manufacturing, software integration, cyber/cloud security, environmental consulting, logistics and construction services. The program is tailored to help these businesses navigate procurement opportunities and scale their operations to meet the needs of corporations.

“Small businesses are at the heart of Arizona’s growth, driving innovation, creating jobs, and building stronger communities. Their role in the local supply chain is essential to sustaining the state’s economy. Leveraging ASU’s innovation and Edson E+I’s inclusive approach, the Small Business Academy empowers business owners to scale their impact, transform their families’ futures, and strengthen Arizona’s economy with practical resources tailored to their needs,” said Kristin Slice, Director of Community Entrepreneurship at ASU’s Edson E+I.

In addition to workshops, small business participants will have an opportunity to pitch their business to SRP and other major organizations during the program’s final event. The Academy aligns with SRP’s supplier diversity strategy and commitment to a diverse supplier base. In 2023, the more than $243 million dollars in purchase orders SRP awarded to diverse suppliers helped SRP meet operational business needs, while also contributing to diverse business growth and sustainability. Suppliers able to grow and expand their businesses support a healthy economy and thriving communities through job growth, expanded tax base and societal investment.

“Through programs like the Small Business Academy and our Supplier Diversity Program, we’re building a more inclusive supply chain and empowering small businesses to make a lasting impact,” added Castro. “The contributions of small and diverse businesses are vital to Arizona’s economy, driving innovation, creating jobs and fostering sustainable growth in our communities.”
