The Phoenix Theatre Company presents Suffs, the acclaimed musical by Shaina Taub, with performances running October 14 – November 29, 2026, in the Hormel Theatre.
This Tony Award-winning musical tells the electrifying true story of the women who fought for their right to vote. From suffragist icons like Alice Paul, Carrie Chapman Catt and Inez Milholland to the young activists who carried the movement forward, Suffs brings one of history’s most important battles to life through a bold, contemporary script and score.
Suffs follows Alice Paul, a passionate patriot who rallies the nation to take a less conservative approach to fighting for women’s right to vote, directly conflicting with the agreeable image of the suffragists created by Carrie Chapman Catt and NAWSA (National American Women Suffrage Association).
Created by Shaina Taub, the first woman to ever independently win Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score in the same season, this “thrilling, inspiring and dazzlingly entertaining” (Variety) musical does not shy away from exploring the real issues these women faced while freedom fighting in the early twentieth century.
The production is directed by Chelsea Andersen, who currently serves as the Executive/Artistic Director at Fort Wayne Civic Theatre, with music direction by Alan J. Plado, and choreography by Lauran Stanis.

It’s funny, it’s heartwarming, and it shows both the struggle and the triumph of all that work.” said Andersen.
“Yes, the story centers on women and their remarkable legacy, but you don’t have to identify as a woman to enjoy it! There’s so much history in this play, but it’s just light and fun and energetic, and it certainly doesn’t feel like a history lesson.”
The cast is led by Cassie Chilton* as Alice Paul, Julie Cardia* as Carrie Chapman Catt, Chanel Bragg* as Mary Church Terrell, Fatima El-Bashir* as Ida B. Wells, Annalese Fusaro* as Inez Milholland, Keilani Akagi* as Ruza Wenclawska, Elyssa Blonder* as Lucy Burns, and Jasmyn Gade* as Doris Stevens.
