Phoenix Bioscience Discovery Oasis Mayo
A delegation from Taiwan including officials, business and start-up founders, hospital leaders and other bioscience industry experts are visiting this week to experience first-hand the cutting-edge research and development being conducted in the field of bioscience and advanced medical technology in Phoenix. The visit is a result of Phoenix’s Bioscience Healthcare Strategic Initiative under Mayor Kate Gallego and Phoenix City Council leadership to elevate the visibility of Phoenix’s globally recognized bioscience industry leaders and institutes of research excellence and innovation.
Congressman Greg Stanton, who represents Arizona’s 4th Congressional District, expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, “We’ve worked for years to position Phoenix as a global leader in the biosciences. Now, thanks to strategic, targeted investments, some of the most cutting-edge research is happening in our own backyard. Phoenix is a place where breakthroughs happen, where cures are discovered, and where we push the limits of human knowledge,” said Stanton. “Arizona’s economic partnership with Taiwan is already paying dividends in the advanced manufacturing sector, and I look forward to exploring opportunities for more collaboration in health care.”
The organizer from Taiwan, Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Promotion Office (BPIPO), serving as Taiwan’s biomedical industry’s gateway, has been dedicated to advancing the fields of precision medicine, regenerative medicine, digital health, and other related areas in recent years. Dr. Michael Huang, Director of BPIPO, remarked, “During this visit to Phoenix, we aim to connect Taiwanese companies involved in the development of new drugs, diagnostics, digital health solutions, and medical devices, along with biomedical accelerators and hospitals. Our objective is to cultivate strategic partnerships for innovation and growth between Taiwan and Phoenix.”
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego conveyed her excitement about the visit, stating, “We are honored to welcome our friends from Taiwan back to the United States, this time to discuss potential partnerships in the thriving bioscience sector. Phoenix is a leader in this emerging market, with new startup companies and discoveries right here in our downtown. Though Phoenix and Taiwan already work closely in the growing semiconductor industry thanks to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)’s investment in our city, I am looking forward to additional collaborations around scientific and medical breakthroughs that will benefit us all.”
The delegation, led by Pei-Li Chen, Deputy Director General of Industrial Development Administration (IDA), Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan, will meet with industry leaders from Dignity Health’s Barrow Neurological Institute and Ivy Brain Tumor Center in the Phoenix Medical Quarter, Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) Part of the City of Hope and tour the 850 PBC on the Phoenix Bioscience Core campus, and Mayo Clinic’s Discovery Oasis ahead of the BIO International Convention in San Diego.
The delegation will meet with top researchers and executives at Mayo Clinic’s Discovery Oasis to discuss areas of mutual interest such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, the Mayo ASU MedTech Accelerator and more. Mayo Clinic is home to research centers specializing in cutting-edge technologies such as gene therapy, regenerative medicine, and personalized medicine. Mayo Clinic has a global track record of successful partnerships with international organizations and is known for its groundbreaking discoveries in the field of bioscience.
Deputy Director General Pei-Li Chen emphasized that biomedicine is a key industry actively promoted by Taiwan, stating, “The Taiwanese government recognizes that innovative technologies integrating interdisciplinary approaches are an inevitable trend in future industrial development. In the improvement of the industry ecosystem and formulation of related regulations, forward-thinking approaches should be adopted to guide the application of biomedical big data, nurture contract development and manufacturing service industries, and combine Taiwan’s biotechnology, information, and communication sectors to promote the establishment and growth of the smart biomedical and smart agriculture chip industries.” “Our goal,” she continued, “is to progress towards a vision of comprehensive age-appropriate health, encompassing healthcare, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care.”
American Institute in Taiwan Commercial Section Chief Betsy Shieh reinforced the importance of this visit. “The U.S.-Taiwan partnership in health technologies is among the most important partnerships in global health cooperation, facilitating the introduction of new medical technologies and treatments for the benefit of patients around the world. Our SelectUSA program aims to help Taiwan firms to bring their leading-edge technologies and solutions to the United States by evaluating potential partnerships that will lead to successful investments in our robust healthcare and medical R&D ecosystem. We are happy to support this important delegation of Taiwan biotech and healthcare leaders to the greater Phoenix region to bolster their interest in investing in the United States,” said Shieh.
“Taiwan’s bioscience industry is among the fastest-growing hubs in the world,” said Greater Phoenix Economic Council President & CEO Chris Camacho. “As we foster this close relationship between Taiwan and Greater Phoenix, there is incredible potential to leverage our combined technological strengths and collaborate in this emerging field for the benefit of both markets.”
TGen, part of City of Hope, is a globally recognized leader in genomics and precision medicine. This close affiliation enables both institutes to complement each other in research and patient care, with City of Hope providing a vital clinical setting to advance scientific discoveries made by the scientists at TGen.
The visit will include rapid pitch sessions at Venture Café Phoenix hosted by Startup Island Taiwan, National Development Council, and the City of Phoenix, titled: Innovation Bridge: Spotlight on Taiwan’s Biotech Ecosystem.
