Koa Pediatric Therapy is a specialized occupational therapy practice based in Scottsdale, Arizona, dedicated to supporting children’s development through a range of therapeutic services. “Rooted in the belief that play is essential to growth and learning, our approach empowers children to thrive in every stage of their journey,” says Lindsey Sandys, OTD, OTR/L, who explains the company she founded in 2024 “was born from the realization that many parents feel overwhelmed and unsupported when navigating their child’s development, especially in the outpatient therapy world.”
Observing a noticeable gap in accessible resources and consistent communication between therapists and families, Dr. Sandys determined to bridge that gap by empowering parents with the tools, guidance, and connection they need to confidently support their child’s growth — as well as provide top-quality interventions that are uniquely tied to the child, whether that be through sensory integration or head shape or by meeting milestones.
As owner of the company, Dr. Sandys found her greatest challenge was overcoming the need to do everything herself. “As someone deeply invested in every detail, it’s been hard to let go and trust others to carry part of the load,” she shares. “But this challenge has taught me the importance of delegation, collaboration and building a strong team. I’ve learned that when I allow others to contribute, the business and the people we serve benefit even more, and I can focus on the vision and impact that really matters.”
“Koa Pediatric Therapy is committed to providing personalized, evidence-based interventions to support each child’s unique developmental journey, ensuring a positive and enriching experience for both children and their families,” says Dr. Sandys. “Through hands-on, gentle interventions and guided parent education, Koa helps infants and children become more attuned to their bodies and environments, laying a strong foundation for future milestones.”
In founding and growing her company, she took to heart the advice to accept that calculated risk is necessary for meaningful growth, and that waiting for perfect certainty often means missing the opportunity altogether. “As detail-oriented as I am, and with a family depending on me, risk is never something I take lightly,” she shares. “Every decision carries weight, and I naturally want to account for every variable before moving forward.
“However, I’ve learned that there’s a difference between being prepared and being paralyzed by overanalysis,” she continues. “When I began building this company, I kept coming back to two things: a genuine passion for the work and a clear, unmet need in the community. That combination became my anchor. It gave me the confidence to move forward even when not every outcome could be guaranteed.”
Applying that advice required her to shift her mindset. Instead of approaching decision-making by asking, “Is this completely safe?” she began asking, “Is this thoughtful, informed and aligned with my purpose?”
Relating, “That change allowed me to take strategic steps forward,” she shares, “In practice, this has looked like trusting my clinical expertise, listening closely to the families we serve, and being willing to adapt quickly rather than waiting for perfect conditions. It also meant accepting that some level of uncertainty is unavoidable, but that it can be managed with preparation, strong values, and a willingness to learn.”
Dr. Sandys credits that advice for helping her move from hesitation to action. “It’s what allowed this company to not only start but to grow in a way that stays grounded in our mission and purpose.”
