In just 30 years, the population of these gentle giants has fallen nearly 40 percent. In the wild, they face habitat loss & degradation, habitat fragmentation, human population growth, population isolation, climate change, oil/gas exploration and poaching.
But hope is not lost!
At the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited Phoenix Zoo (in collaboration with other AZA-accredited zoos and other field partners), we are focused on ensuring a future for wild giraffe. We are active participants in the AZA’s Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) collaboration for Masai giraffe, which focuses on direct conservation actions, education, scientific research, public awareness and bringing the animal care skills of the AZA community to support conservation.
The Zoo is currently home to three Masai giraffes: Sunshine, Imara and Miguu. Masai giraffe are one of nine subspecies of giraffe. They are the largest of the giraffes, growing up to 18 feet tall, making them the tallest land mammals on earth. Their spots are generally larger and darker than other giraffes and are jagged, resembling oak leaves.
