The Salt River Bridge will soon become an illuminated gateway between downtown and south Phoenix, as the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub (SCE/DH) light rail project continues to make investments in this corridor. This lighting feature, being added to the bridge this spring, will create an important, visual connection between these two communities and help welcome residents and visitors alike into this community.

“From photographs on postcards to drone footage in advertisements, we know that iconic bridges define and connect communities,” Mayor Kate Gallego said.”I am excited that the new programmable lighting on the Central Avenue bridge will help us celebrate sports championships, holidays and other local events that foster city pride. When complete, I also hope that Phoenix residents will want to integrate this beautiful new landmark in their graduation or wedding photos.”

Guided by the community’s vision and designed to complement the bridge’s unique structural features, the lighting enhancement will improve visibility while creating a distinctive landmark along the light rail corridor. This addition to the project, funded through City of Phoenix T2050, demonstrates the ongoing investment in infrastructure that serves both practical needs and community pride.

The lighting enhancement installation will run from February 17 to mid-April, impacting local traffic. It will be ready and lit in time for the SCE/DH project opening in mid-2025. Learn more here.
