Nursing Students Assist in Pandemic Response, Providing Covid-19 Vaccines and Testing Across the Valley

Maricopa County Community College District

As of February 17, the United States surpassed 56 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, with more than 1,227,271 doses tracked throughout Arizona. As efforts continue to administer the vaccine across the state, the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) is proud to have its MaricopaNursing students on the front lines, administering vaccines and COVID-19 testing to community members.

“All MaricopaNursing Colleges have volunteered to assist with the pandemic healthcare activities in any way possible, helping administer vaccines, screening, testing, and monitoring patients, among other tasks such as working as “helping hands” wherever needed,” said Dr. Margi Schultz, MCCCD Administrator of MaricopaNursing. “Our students are being scheduled to assist at state and county-run Point Of Dispensing (POD) sites and we will also be scheduling shifts in facilities such as the Carl T. Hayden Veteran’s Administration Medical Center to administer vaccines and help as needed.”

Located at eight of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges – including Chandler-Gilbert, Estrella Mountain, GateWay, Glendale, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, and Scottsdale Community Colleges – the MaricopaNursing consortium provides accessible, affordable quality nursing education that prepares graduates to serve in diverse communities.

“Community is an integral value within our District, and we are overjoyed that our MaricopaNursing students are able to assist our community with such an essential need,” said MCCCD Interim Chancellor, Dr. Steven R. Gonzales. “On behalf of the Maricopa Community Colleges, I send my deepest gratitude to our students for their contribution to public health and safety.”

This four-semester nursing program is broken down into four blocks. Block one covers nursing fundamentals; block two studies medical, surgical, and psychiatric nursing; block three is medical, surgical, and obstetric nursing; and block four covers complex care and pediatric nursing, in addition to a capstone.
