As Arizona’s population continues to grow, so does the diversity of its industries. In 2022, the global art market, as reported by Art Basel, reached a staggering $67.8 billion, and the demand for artists is projected to increase by at least 6% until 2031.
For those with the impulse to create, the coming years hold vast opportunities to transform a hobby into a thriving profession. However, succeeding as an artist requires more than just passion; it necessitates a serious consideration of one’s skills as a potential career.
I have personally transformed my love for painting into a full-time vocation, specializing in murals, custom canvas art, and commissioned pieces that span various parts of the nation. I believe any artist can create a flourishing career out of their talent, but it demands unwavering commitment and the right mindset.
Here are some invaluable tips for artists looking to infuse a business-oriented approach into their craft and secure lucrative opportunities.
Know the audience. When embarking on a journey toward a full-time art career, understanding your niche and identifying your target audience is paramount. Art is often a subjective and nebulous concept, so artists must be able to clearly define their style, preferred medium and, ultimately, what they offer to whom.
Who are the potential buyers of your art, and what medium resonates with them? Is there a specific age group or geographic location that aligns with your work? Are there many other artists selling similar art, or is your style completely unique? Answering these questions will not only help you determine pricing but also guide decisions regarding where to showcase your work, where to sell it and how to reach your intended audience.
If an artist lacks a clear understanding of their potential clientele, they are not approaching their work as a business. Pride in your artwork is important, but others must see its value for you to build a sustainable career.
Build a portfolio. Just like in any business, organization is key to success. Artists should curate portfolios that not only display their proudest works but also showcase their diverse capabilities and the various mediums available for commission. A professional portfolio should include high-resolution images, perhaps descriptions of the works, testimonials to share what sets you apart, and a display of your unique personality and brand.
Use social media. Social media is a valuable platform that can instantly expose your work to thousands of potential clients. It’s also a fantastic way to identify and engage with your target audience while collecting valuable metrics about your artwork’s performance.
When establishing a social media presence, opt for image-centric platforms such as Instagram or YouTube. There are creative ways to showcase your art through posts or even video reels that offer a behind-the-scenes look at your creative process. Personally, I have found Instagram to be an excellent tool for audience engagement, networking, and directing viewers to my website.
Network. Networking plays a pivotal role in any career, and the world of art is no exception. For budding artists, it’s crucial to share your work and passion with as many people as possible. With a professional website, an extensive portfolio and a strong body of work, your artistic journey is bound to ascend.
As an active member and current president of my BNI Networking group, I can attest to the power of networking in forging new connections and opportunities. Not only do networking groups offer new social connections, but they are often a breeding ground for valuable knowledge, ongoing business education and support with personal and professional growth.
Your journey as a business-minded artist begins with a commitment to both your craft and your career aspirations. Embrace the possibilities, and may your creative endeavors flourish in the years to come.
