As we all know by the 3-digit temperatures, summer is here! And with that, the kids are out of school, moms and dads are itching for some indoor activities to wear them out and sub sequentially, the Downtown Mesa businesses are hitting their slowest time of the year.
In an effort to improve summertime business in Downtown Mesa and also offer lunchtime activities for those with kids at home, The Downtown Mesa Association is now offering Kidtastic Mini-Events at various participating businesses every Wednesday at 10:30 or 11:00am.
The Kidtastic Mini-Events started off at Subway with Subman teaching kids about healthy eating. Parents received a free kids meal with adult meal purchase and $1 off to the Arizona Museum of Natural History. Following that, the next week, was a “Tea and Crumpets” party at Inside the Bungalow, the cute house turned coffee shop on Robson. The kids received mini-muffins, yogurt with berries and juice as well as a tea tasting for just $3. Parents got to enjoy their full breakfast and coffee menu. Owner, Betty Freeman, read a book about the Boston Tea Party and taught the kids about tea, its origins and how it’s made.
This next week, June 26th, the kids will have a chance to decorate their own cookies at the award winning Sweet Cakes Café! For $5.50, kids will get a kids meal complete with PB&J or Grilled Cheese, chips and a drink and a giant cookie to decorate however they wish. Colored frosting and decorations will be provided and the kids will be read the book, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”
The Downtown Mesa Association and participating businesses are working to keep these mini-events affordable for the parents while still being beneficial for the businesses. “I look at it as a win-win,” states Erica Weatherford, Events Manager for The Downtown Mesa Association, “With the heat and the light rail construction here, we need to do what we can to support our struggling downtown businesses that still have so much to offer. These events fill two needs. You can’t get any better than that!”
