Three Ways to Support Moms in the Workplace

Mothers are incredible, and that’s why we joyously celebrate them each Mother’s Day. Yet, when it comes to supporting mothers in the workplace, we have room for improvement. A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences highlights that new mothers often face penalties for prioritizing caretaking responsibilities, contributing to what’s known as the “motherhood penalty.” It’s disheartening to see mothers facing pay cuts or having to leave their jobs altogether, while studies show that new fathers often receive bonuses.

But we can do better, Phoenix. At Plexus Worldwide, I have the privilege of working with many amazing moms who excel at balancing work and motherhood. We can all contribute to creating a supportive workplace environment where we value and appreciate the unique talents of our employees, including their roles as parents.

Here are three proactive steps we can take to start making a positive change:

Create a supportive work culture. Companies can make significant strides by evaluating and enhancing parental leave policies. Providing strong onboarding and offboarding processes for new mothers is crucial. Last year, at Plexus, we introduced a paternal leave program to support the entire family during the transition back to work. Additionally, we’ve designated spaces for breastfeeding mothers to ensure privacy and comfort. By offering proper resources and development plans, we empower mothers with the support they need to succeed.

Consider flexible, hybrid, and remote work options. Flexible work arrangements, such as hybrid or remote schedules, have become increasingly important, especially for new mothers. Many seek flexibility to balance their caregiving responsibilities effectively. At Plexus, we’ve embraced flexible work hours and hybrid work options. It’s about trust and setting clear expectations beyond clocking in and out. When employees feel trusted and appreciated, they perform their best.

Create family-friendly benefits. Regularly evaluating and improving benefits is essential. Conducting employee surveys can provide valuable insights into how benefits can better serve mothers and families. At Plexus, our recent staff survey helped us refine internal communications and benefit offerings. Acts of kindness, such as grocery discounts or family health benefits, go a long way in supporting working parents.

By fostering a corporate culture of empathy and support, we empower everyone in the workforce. Let’s not confine our appreciation for mothers to just one day a year. Let’s empower them every day and show our gratitude for all they do.
