Mayor Weise noted that providing information to the public about the benefits of a new Regional Transportation Plan — known as MOMENTUM 2050 — will be a top priority, as implementation of the plan is contingent upon voter approval of the extension of the half-cent sales tax for transportation known as Proposition 400.

“Funding received through Prop 400 is the most significant single revenue source that allows MAG to carry out its important mission of improving and expanding our transportation system,” said Mayor Weise. “It keeps all of us moving safely and serves an important role in economic development and prosperity, not only for our rapidly growing region, but for the state of Arizona. If approved by voters, our focus will immediately turn to preparing for implementation of the multimodal transportation investment plan we’ve built together.”

Weise also vowed to focus efforts on addressing homelessness in the region and continuing implementation of the Pathways Home Regional Homelessness Action Plan approved in 2021.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego was elected to serve as MAG Vice Chair, and Carefree Mayor Les Peterson as Treasurer. Those selected to serve as at-large members Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke El Mirage Mayor Alexis Hermosillo, and Buckeye Mayor Eric Orsborn. Mesa Mayor John Giles will move into the position of past chair. The MAG Regional Council is a 32-member board that serves as the governing and policy-making body for MAG.

Other newly elected officers include Peoria City Manager Jeff Tyne, who will serve as chair for the MAG Management Committee. Mesa City Manager Chris Brady will serve as the vice chair. The Management Committee is responsible for receiving input from MAG technical committees, analyzing the technical and policy implications, and providing recommendations to the MAG Regional Council.

Maricopa County Supervisor Jack Sellers will serve as chair of the Transportation Policy Committee, with Buckeye Mayor Eric Orsborn as the vice chair. The TPC is responsible for overseeing the development of the 20-year Regional Transportation Plan and to guide transportation planning in the region.

The MAG Economic Development Committee also will welcome new officers, with Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis selected as chair and Glendale Councilmember Ray Malnar as vice chair. The EDC develops initiatives to advance economic vitality in the region, especially transportation infrastructure.

All newly elected officers will serve a one-year term.
