Valley Metro, in partnership with Mpact, a national nonprofit organization focused on community and development around public transit, will host the Mpact Transit+ Community Conference (formerly Rail~Volution) at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown, Nov. 5-8, 2023. The theme of the conference is: Transit Moves Us. Community Connects Us.

“Our city has embraced transit-oriented development as a catalyst for economic growth, community revitalization and an enhanced quality of life,” stated Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Mpact community and other cities to inspire innovative solutions that will shape the future of transit and community development.”

The focus of the four-day conference is advancing specific tools and approaches to building more equitable and sustainable transit-oriented communities.

“We are very excited to be coming to Phoenix this November to host a robust conversation about building better places to live around transit,” Mpact CEO, Tamar Shapiro said. “There are models – in metro Phoenix and from around the country and world – that are doing this work well, together with community partners. The Mpact Transit + Community will be an opportunity to share what works, explore what’s possible, and get inspired for the hard but rewarding work that lies ahead.”

Session topics include downtown revitalization, adapting transit to evolving work and travel patterns, climate change, and housing affordability with a focus on practical, real-world approaches.

“We are privileged to welcome the Mpact Transit+ Community Conference to Phoenix,” said Jessica Mefford-Miller, Valley Metro CEO. “As a region that has experienced remarkable transformation through our light rail and transit-oriented communities, we are eager to showcase metro Phoenix’s successes and provide valuable insights to conference attendees.”

The 2023 conference will also celebrate the transformation of metro Phoenix since the introduction of light rail to the region 15 years ago. The implementation of light rail, alongside subsequent investments in streetcar and regional bus routes, has played a pivotal role in stimulating more than $17 billion in housing and business development.

The Mpact Transit + Community conference has made a significant impact on shaping the vision for transit-oriented communities over the past 30 years. It serves as a key platform to share challenges, innovative solutions, and best practices, fostering collaboration, innovation, communication, and leadership.
