Talent and business consulting firm Robert Half released its 2023 Examining the Multigenerational Workforce report which explores what motivates workers of four distinct generations that make up today’s workforce. Social and economic disruption in the past few years compunded with a global health crisis have transformed workers’ life priorities and notion of what it means to have a job. Understanding these differences and what influences different generations matter even more now when the competition to hire and retain workers remains fierce and top performers continue to quit at a high rate.
You can find the full report here and a Robert Half workplace trends expert can discuss the report in detail and discuss generational similarities and differences, either this week or next.
5 trends to know about today’s muligenerational workforce:
- Money matters most, except to Gen Z who values flexibility over salary. By a wide margin, millennials, Gen Xers and Baby boomers say a competitive salary has the biggest influence on their job satisfaction and desire to stay with a company. Gen X workers are most likely to feel underpaid.
- Gen Z wants the best of both worlds, preferring to choose when and where to work while also craving more in-person interactions than workers of other generations.
- Baby boomers are the least worried about AI impacting their jobs, while Gen Z’s concerns about AI and their job security are much greater (78%).
- Surprisingly, full-time contract work is most appealing to Gen Z – half of Gen Z looking for full time contract work in 2023.
- Lack of salary transparency is a deal breaker across generations.
