The wait may have been 30 years, but the end result was well worth it. Willmeng Construction completed work on the new Mesa Gateway Library, the first public library to be built in the city in 30 years. The project, located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway in the heart of the Eastmark Great Park, is a stunning, state-of-the-art community centerpiece designed to serve its users for generations to come.

“What a beautiful addition to the community, and we couldn’t be prouder to play our part in delivering this priceless asset to the City of Mesa,” said Willmeng CEO James Murphy. “This was truly a team effort and we are grateful for the collaboration with the City of Mesa staff, the design teams and all of our trade partners who were a part of this project.”

Willmeng led the construction of the 28,272 square foot facility, which was designed by renowned architecture firm Richärd Kennedy Architects. The library is organized around an open market concept unified by a soaring, folded roof. The ceiling is finished with wood planks and the material palette used on the library focuses on durability and desert-responsive performance, utilizing 24-gauge Corten metal roofing, Exitron 16-gauge mill finish steel, and prefinished metal wall panels.

“There was so much detail involved in this project, and the coordination and planning that went into this one was next level,” added Murphy. “We take our role very seriously when it comes to public projects like this. We want to be good stewards of the City’s resources and also create a facility that reflects the character of the community and is a space that will be utilized and shared for many years to come.”

The interior, which was designed by White Baux Studio includes advanced technological infrastructure such as a THINKspot makerspace, three Zoom rooms, and a digital art display wall. Also, the project demonstrates industry leadership in inclusivity through a dedicated sensory room for the Certified Autism Center, which utilizes trauma-informed design to select lighting and materials for neurodiverse populations.

The project’s elevated, modern look is reflected in its recognition by the 2024 ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards.
