Phoenix has been recognized by Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as one of 119 cities across the globe that is taking bold leadership on environmental action and transparency. Thanks to the environmental efforts implemented by Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and the City, Phoenix received an A score.

“Phoenix is on the frontlines of climate change, which is why we’re working day-in and day-out to develop new strategies to cut emissions, build resilient infrastructure, and importantly, empower residents to take climate action, too,” Mayor Gallego said. “We are proud that CDP has validated our work, and pledge to continue our mission to become the most sustainable desert city in the world.”

CDP’s Cities A-list is based on environmental data disclosed by cities to CDP-ICLEI Track. In 2023, just over one in ten cities scored by CDP (13%) received an A.

To score an A, in part, among other actions, Phoenix disclosed environmental efforts publicly through the CDP-ICLEI Track. Part of this disclosure is having a city-wide emissions inventory and having published a climate action plan.

A-list cities are demonstrating their climate leadership through concerted and effective action. They are taking four times as many mitigation and adaptation measures as non-A-list cities.

Phoenix is a leader in addressing climate challenges. Some examples include the City’s work to install 220 new shade structures at bus stopswinning the 2023 Top Green Fleet Award from the National Association of Fleet Administrators for work in transitioning fleet vehicles to electric and installing over 100 miles of Cool Pavement to reduce the urban heat island effect.

Phoenix joins 118 other cities on this year’s A-List that are being recognized for their urgent and impactful climate action – from ambitious emissions reduction targets to building resilience against climate change.
