Locally Owned Pizzeria Named to National 40/40 List

Fired Pie

QSR Magazine has announced its annual 40/40 list of America’s hottest startup fast casuals in 2021 and locally-owned and operated fast-casual pizza concept, Fired Pie, is included as the only Arizona-based restaurant on the list. The magazine reports that the list includes “a look at the 40 fast-casual concepts with fewer than 40 locations that survived COVID-19 and are primed for success in our new normal.

“If there’s one sure thing coming out of the pandemic, it’s that Americans love pizza and turn to it in good times and bad,” said Sam Oches, editorial director of Food News Media, publisher of QSR. “But people are still discerning when it comes to which pizza they order, and competition in the category is as stiff as ever. That means a quality pie is still necessary to win in the pizza game. Fired Pie not only offers a premium pizza offering, but also a variety of menu items that can satisfy multiple guest need states, making it the perfect solution for customers in a post-pandemic world. That’s why we were thrilled to include it on this year’s 40/40 List.”

The magazine evaluates restaurants for the list based on the brand’s menu, branding and potential trajectory. In 2013, Fired Pie exploded on the dining scene as the first fast-casual pizza and salad restaurant of its kind in Phoenix. The concept offers guests a completely customizable experience with over 40 toppings to choose from, including plant-based meats, premium ingredients, freshly made sauce and dough, gluten-free and vegan options, like vegan cheese and plant-based chorizo .

“It has been a trying year for the restaurant industry, and we are so grateful that our customers have shown us so much love and support,” said Fired Pie Co-Owner, Fred Morgan. “Through this, we’ve never lost sight of our vision to offer our customers quality ingredients and a truly customizable experience.”

This past year, Fired Pie turned seven, celebrated its 20 Valley locations, and announced the opening of its newest concept, a fast-casual rapid online and carryout location at 19th Avenue and Northern in Phoenix. Unlike other Fired Pie locations, the new spot caters to those on the go, who are looking to receive customizable pizza, salad and mac ‘n cheese dishes without the hassle of waiting in a line.

During the pandemic, Fired Pie remains committed to its mission to give back and serve the community. This includes fundraisers with nonprofits like Phoenix Children’s Hospital, No Kid Hungry and allowing their customers to raise money for local charities. Local 501(c) charities can choose any Fired Pie location and the store will donate 20% of the funds they bring in.

“We place a large emphasis on staying local and supporting our community,” said Fired Pie Co-Owner, Doug Doyle. “We take great pride in the fact that this is a company we started on our own but can still compete with the big franchises. We are so appreciative that our customers involve us in the community, in their lives, and that we are able to support local charities, schools and little leagues.”

Throughout the year, Fired Pie has also donated large catering packages to hospitals as a thank you to healthcare heroes. They even implemented 50% off days for healthcare workers and first responders. Additionally, Fired Pie hosted a free entrée day as a thank you to police and fireman, where they served over 750 meals in one day.

Currently, with 19 stores in Metro Phoenix and one in Tucson, Ariz., the company has plans to open three to five more stores within the next year, including out-of-state expansion.
