Putting Your Best Face Forward

by Scott Foust

Even in the era of LinkedIn and Zoom, a quality headshot is one of the most powerful tools for shaping your personal brand. Whether you’re updating your website, sharing a press release or speaking at a conference, a professional image says you mean business.

Start by hiring a photographer whose work you admire and who comes recommended. Ask about session fees, usage rights and costs for high-resolution, lightly retouched images in both color and black and white. Be clear about how you plan to use the image — billboards, book covers and promotional materials often require additional licensing.

Dress in solid colors that flatter your skin tone and reflect your personal and professional style. Think textured fabrics, classic silhouettes or a pop of your company’s color. Avoid anything too seasonal or loud.

Bring a few outfit options and dress head to toe. A skilled photographer may capture a great full-length or three-quarter portrait you’ll want later.

Keep the background clean and unfussy. And be sure you’re getting high-res files — what looks crisp online might fall flat in print. Aim for an 8×10 JPEG at 300 dpi.

During the shoot, relax and follow your photographer’s direction. Don’t stress about your “good side.” A skilled photographer will use lighting and angles to make both sides look great. And capture both smiling and more serious shots; you may need both in the future.

Finally, relax! A great headshot should look like you — on your best day.
