Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine to Break Ground on 47,000 SquareFoot, $9.5 Million Mixed-Use Building

Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine December 19, 2013

Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine will officially break ground January 8 on a new 47,000 square-foot mixed-use building. The $9.5-million campus expansion supports the college’s record-enrollment numbers and growing patient volume in the medical center as well as future plans to add new degree programs and community classes to match the growing interest in naturopathic medicine.

“Our campus expansion will provide space SCNM needs including a much larger library, more group and individual study spaces, a café, exercise space and updated classrooms to support lecture and team-based learning. Additionally, SCNM will explore new frontiers in naturopathic medicine with an integrative regenerative healing center for the treatment of pain and a demonstration kitchen for patient and community education. At every step of the process, we reaffirmed our commitment to the healing power of nature and the goal of serving humanity through naturopathic medicine,” said Paul Mittman, ND, Ed.D., president and CEO of SCNM.

The new building was designed by Cawley Architects and will be built by LGE Design Build, both of Phoenix.  Axis Developments of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is the general contractor.

SCNM enrollment has increased 60 percent since 2008 as the number of men and women graduating from accredited U.S. naturopathic colleges nationwide has grown from 5,244 in 2007 to more than 7,300 in 2012.  Since opening in 1993, originally in Scottsdale, more than 1,000 naturopathic physicians have graduated from SCNM. SCNM moved to the Tempe location in 1996 and built a new medical center in 2010.

SCNM has experienced consistent growth in providing health care services at SCNM’s on-site medical center, 10 community clinics and student off-site clerkships. In the past year, students and faculty served more than 50,000 people in the Phoenix area.
