SRP Names New General Manager and CEO

Salt River Project | March 6, 2018

Salt River Project’s Board of Directors today selected Mike Hummel to succeed Mark B. Bonsall as the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer and lead day-to-day operations of the community-based, not-for-profit public power utility.

Hummel, 57, will assume responsibilities in May. Hummel is currently SRP’s Deputy General Manager of Resources & Finance.  Bonsall announced his intention to retire last year after working at SRP since 1977.

“I am honored to have been able to work at this company for the last 35 years of my life and humbled to have been chosen to continue to build upon SRP’s already strong legacy,” said Hummel.  “The community we serve can expect that I will lead this organization in the best interest of our electric customers, water shareholders and our dedicated employees.”

SRP President David Rousseau said the Board’s decision reflects its ongoing commitment to SRP’s priorities of providing outstanding customer satisfaction, reliable electric and water service and strong community involvement.

“We had a number of strong, experienced candidates that the committee fully considered, but I am confident we made the right choice in Mike to lead SRP and build on the strong leadership Mark Bonsall has shown since he was named General Manager in 2011,” said Rousseau.  “Mike has the experience and the expertise to provide the type of leadership that will continue to serve our customers well.”

“Mike Hummel is eminently capable of dealing with the challenges public power utilities face as the industry moves into a new era,” said Bonsall.  “Our mission has always been to deliver low-cost, reliable power and water. I have every confidence that Mike Hummel will guide SRP into the future with our customers and the community’s wellbeing at the forefront.”

Hummel became SRP’s Deputy General Manager, Resources & Finance in March 2016. He was named Associate General Manager & Chief Power System Executive in July 2011. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona.

Hummel is a registered Professional Engineer in Arizona and Nevada; and he successfully completed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Nuclear Reactor Technology Program.

As an active leader on professional, technical and community boards, Hummel currently serves on the Arizona Science Center Board of Trustees; University of Arizona Foundation’s Board of Trustees; University of Arizona’s College of Engineering Industry Partner Board; Trapper Mine Board of Directors; EPRI’s Research Advisory Committee, and the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

SRP is the largest provider of electricity in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, serving more than 1 million customers.  SRP is also the Valley’s largest supplier of water, delivering about 800,000 acre-feet annually to municipal, urban and agricultural water users.
