In the week ending May 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 2,438,000, a decrease of 249,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 294,000 from 2,981,000 to 2,687,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,042,000, a decrease of 501,000 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by73,500 from 3,616,500 to 3,543,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 17.2 percent for the week ending May 9, an increase of 1.7 percentage points from the previous week’s revised rate. The previous week’s rate was revised down by 0.2 from 15.7 to 15.5 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 9 was 25,073,000, an increase of 2,525,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised down by 285,000 from 22,833,000 to 22,548,000. The 4-week moving average was 22,002,250, an increase of 2,313,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised down by 71,250 from 19,760,000 to 19,688,750.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 2,174,329 in the week ending May 16, a decrease of 182,265 (or -7.7 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 40,307 (or 1.7 percent) from the previous week. There were 191,931 initial claims in the comparable week in 2019. In addition, for the week ending May 16, 35states reported 2,226,921initial claims for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 15.7 percent during the week ending May 9, an increase of 1.4 percentage points from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 22,942,103, an increase of 2,062,552 (or 9.9 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 248,029 (or -1.2 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.1 percent and the volume was 1,543,472.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending May 2 was 27,263,538, an increase of 1,900,327 from the previous week. There were 1,564,588 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2019.

Extended Benefits were available in Connecticut, Michigan, and Rhode Island during the week ending May 2.

Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,723 in the week ending May 9, a decrease of 310 from the prior week. There were 1,076 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 176 from the preceding week.

There were 15,405 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 2, a decrease of 1,449 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 10,930, a decrease of 828 from the prior week.

During the week ending May 2, 27 states reported 6,121,221 individuals claiming Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits and 15 states reported 162,727 individuals claiming Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 2 were in Nevada (23.5), Michigan (22.6), Washington (22.1), Rhode Island (19.9), New York (19.6), Connecticut (19.3), Puerto Rico (19.2), Mississippi (18.8), Vermont (18.8), and Georgia (18.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 9 were in Florida (+48,222), Georgia (+14,420), Washington (+8,615), New York (+4,309), and South Dakota (+1,340), while the largest decreases were in California (-103,590), Texas (-102,382), Oklahoma (-54,806), North Carolina (-28,602), and Missouri (-21,382).
