Kraus-Anderson Construction Company (KA) announced it has acquired Phoenix-based Sonoran Crest Construction, a 20-year-old firm with an established brand and healthcare presence in the southwest U.S. This is the first acquisition of another company in KA Construction’s 126-year history. The terms of the agreement are confidential.
Through market sector diversification and geographic expansion, the acquisition will expand KA’s growth in the southwest U.S., the fifth largest construction market in the country and a national hub for the healthcare industry, one of KA’s largest building units. KA is currently ranked 19th in the nation among the top healthcare general contractors in the U.S. by Modern Healthcare magazine. Sonoran Crest, named Top Healthcare Construction Services Provider 2023 by Healthcare Business Review, has built projects for regional healthcare providers such as Banner Health, Abrazo Health, Honor-Health and Healthcare Trust of America. Complex healthcare projects have included ambulatory surgery centers, compounding laboratories, pharmacies, in-hospital construction, imaging, dental, medical clinics and treatment centers.
In addition to healthcare, KA brings to the region a vast portfolio in numerous building sectors, including education, commercial, hospitality, offices, retail, housing and mixed-use developments, as well as deep experience with buildouts and special projects.
“Sonoran Crest’s highly regarded reputation, expertise and construction team align beautifully with our strategic planning, and as importantly, with our existing culture and core purpose of building enduring relationships and strong communities,” said Al Gerhardt, president of Kraus-Anderson Construction Company. “The expansion will further cultivate a solid footprint by leveraging synergies and diversified capabilities to capitalize on a dynamic regional market.”
KA aims to leverage Sonoran Crest’s reputation by providing KA’s extensive technical resources, including facilities assessment and sustainability, strategic facility planning and building science among other in-house expertise.
“Kraus-Anderson Construction’s first-ever acquisition is a historic milestone that marks the significance of this strategic alignment,” said TJ Roe, chairman and founder of Sonoran Crest. “KA is a leader in the industry, and its wealth of talent and exceptional resources will propel robust growth in our burgeoning market. Our symmetry of complementary strengths, unified vision of the future, and common values will provide a solid foundation for success. We are thrilled to become a part of the Kraus-Anderson family.” Roe will serve as Sonoran Crest’s director of business development.
The new name, Sonoran Crest Construction – A Division of Kraus-Anderson Construction Company, will be located at 1401 North 24th Street in Phoenix. The office will be led by Jaki Scott, director of operations, who has influenced the growth and sustainability of Sonoran Crest for more than 10 years. She is regarded as a passionate leader in developing people and utilizing strengths of individuals in high performing teams.
