The Herberger Theater Center and Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) announced that following the 2022-2023 season, ATC plans to move its productions to Tempe Center for the Arts. Arizona Theatre Company has performed at the Herberger Theater Center since it opened in 1989.

Mark Mettes, President & CEO of the Herberger Theater Center, said that the decision will enable the Herberger Theater Center to focus on efforts to expand and enhance its programming and include increased variety in performances.

“We have valued our relationship with ATC over the years and wish them success in the future. Although the Herberger Theater Center is disappointed with ATC’s decision to leave, we believe it creates an opportunity to accelerate our strategic planning for the future,” says Mettes. “We are currently evaluating many exciting new opportunities for performing company rentals, presenting and co-production of programs, and alternative uses of spaces for events.”

This season, ATC will perform its entire 2022-23 season at the Herberger Theater Center, running October 20, 2022 to July 16, 2023. ATC has presented more than 200 productions and 3,600 performances at the Herberger Theater Center over the years.

“We’re eternally grateful to the Herberger Theater Center for being a critical part of our legacy as Arizona’s State Theatre,” said Geri Wright, Manager Director of ATC. “We’re excited to kick off our 55th Season at the Herberger Theater Center and look forward to welcoming audiences for six amazing shows.”

“The Herberger Theater Center continues to be a gathering place for the arts and the community,” says Mettes. “We continue to evolve to best serve the Phoenix arts community and encourage everyone to see what is happening at the Herberger Theater Center every week.”

The Herberger Theater Center is Arizona’s center stage, engaging the community through diverse arts experiences that ignite emotion, stimulate conversation, and inspire connections with the arts. Built in 1989 to foster the growth of performing arts and revitalize downtown Phoenix, the Herberger Theater has celebrated the diverse, multicultural heritage of the Phoenix community with accessible performing arts experiences year after year. It is proud to be home to four resident performing arts companies: Arizona Theatre Company, Childsplay Theatre, Arizona Opera, and iTheatre Collaborative. The Herberger Theater Center also sustains several arts education and outreach programs that provide children with a chance to experience the beauty and magic of live theater.
