Cronkite News is expanding its reach in the Phoenix market and extending to Southern Arizona with weekday newscasts on Cox YurView. In Phoenix and in Southern Arizona, the half-hour newscast will air on YurView Ch. 4/Phoenix-Ch. 7/Southern AZ weekdays at 6:00 pm.  Beyond each day’s show, viewers can tune into Cronkite newsbreaks at 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

“Supporting youth and education is part of our DNA at Cox,” said Susan Anable, Cox Phoenix market vice president adding, “Excellence in journalism is near and dear to my heart as an ASU journalism graduate.  Cox is thrilled to provide our YurView channel as a platform for Cronkite News to reach even more viewers throughout Arizona.”

Cronkite News, one of several capstone immersion experiences at the Cronkite School, is a multi-platform newsroom. Students work under the guidance of expert faculty to produce 30-minute award-winning newscast four days each week.

“We’re very excited about this evolution in our partnership with ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.” Said Rich Barone, Arizona vice president of Cox Media adding, “The school is providing our local YurView channels with their award-winning newscast highlighting news, business, weather and sports from Arizona, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Not only will this provide YurView viewers with more great content, but it will also provide the next generation of journalism talent at Cronkite an additional distribution channel to showcase their work.”

“In addition to our relationship with Arizona PBS, we are thrilled to now have this partnership with Cox that will extend the awareness of the excellent work our students generate. We look forward to reaching new audiences and providing a credible news source for our community,” said Dr. Battinto L. Batts, Jr. Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications dean and professor.

Cronkite News first aired in 1989 and has become a staple of Arizona journalism providing students with the opportunity to cover impactful stories in English and Spanish. Content is focused in topic areas including borderlands, health, indigenous communities, money, next gen, politics, social justice, sports and sustainability. Often Cronkite News stories are syndicated on different networks nationally.

More than 140 student journalists across bureaus in Phoenix, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles produce content for Cronkite news, and they are led by full-time professors who are industry veterans.
