Appointments Recommended But No Longer Required at State COVID-19 Vaccination Sites

Arizona Department of Health Services

With plenty of capacity currently available at state-run COVID-19 vaccination sites, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) is encouraging people to visit any time during operating hours, if that’s their preference, to get their COVID-19 vaccine. However, making an appointment is still the best way to complete your vaccination appointment as quickly as possible.

“The appointment numbers clearly suggest that we’ve accommodated a large share of Arizonans who are able to schedule appointments well in advance,” said ADHS Director Dr. Cara Christ. “State-run sites continue to vaccinate many thousands every day, and there is now room for those who simply want to walk in at their convenience.”

Locations and hours of state-run COVID-19 vaccination sites in the Valley, Tucson, Yuma, and Flagstaff are available at azdhs.gov/FindVaccine. This website also lists the growing number of other locations offering vaccination, including pharmacies and federally qualified health centers. State sites will continue operating in the coming weeks and an increasing supply of vaccine will allow a greater shift to locations further into communities, including pop-up clinics in neighborhood locations and at employers.

There are still advantages to making an appointment at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Yuma Civic Center, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona State University’s Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, WestWorld in Scottsdale, and at Dexcom in southeast Mesa on our website at podvaccine.azdhs.gov. Most importantly, you’ll arrive with all required information already in the system, significantly reducing your registration time.

Many state-run sites currently have same-day appointments available.

To make an appointment, please visit podvaccine.azdhs.gov or call 1-844-542-8201. Hours of operation for the call center are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, seven days a week. Both resources offer assistance in English and Spanish.

“When demand for vaccination outpaced supply, requiring appointments was absolutely necessary at state-run sites,” Dr. Christ said. “As we move into the next phase of COVID-19 vaccination, with supply meeting and even exceeding the current demand, we don’t want making an appointment to be a barrier to getting vaccinated. So please feel free to drop by.”

Please note that the Gila River Arena site has blackout dates, with no appointments or walk-in availability, on days when the Arizona Coyotes play home games. The team’s schedule can be found here.

To date, 4,888,954 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Arizona to 2,880,130 individuals, of whom 2,186,715 have been fully vaccinated. State sites have administered 1,415,994 of those doses to 805,542 individuals, of whom 652,422 have been fully vaccinated.

State-run sites offer the Pfizer vaccine, which is available to those age 16 and older. Other sites may offer the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccines, which are approved for those 18 and older.
