Sun Health is looking to the future as they take full ownership of Freedom Plaza, a first-of-its-kind life plan community located in Peoria that was designed and built by senior living pioneer and philanthropist Robert Roskamp. Roskamp’s Freedom Plaza Limited Partnership and Sun Health have co-owned the campus since its’ development, which includes independent living, assisted living, and memory care, helping senior residents thrive.
“Bob Roskamp and Sun Health have been partners in Freedom Plaza for almost 40 years,” said Joseph La Rue, president of Sun Health. “As Bob contemplated his retirement from the industry and the future of Freedom Plaza and its residents, his priority was for Freedom Plaza residents to be part of a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing current and future residents peace of mind for decades to come. Bob entrusted Sun Health with his legacy, and Sun Health is happy to welcome Freedom Plaza residents to the Sun Health family.”
The community will have the opportunity to join Sun Health, Peoria Councilman Michael Finn and local leaders for a ceremony celebrating this next step for Freedom Plaza on April 16, 2025. Festivities will include unveiling the new sign, proudly announcing Freedom Plaza as “A Sun Health Community” and a small reception where attendees will hear from Bob Roskamp and Sun Health Board of Directors chair, Dr. Irene Kovala.
Opened in 1989, Freedom Plaza contains 343 independent living apartments and has the distinction of being the tallest building in Peoria. The community employs more than 300 people in the city of Peoria and works with local high schools to help local youth obtain career experience. Currently, the community has an 89.9 percent occupancy rate.
