The 023 Gabe Zimmerman Public Service Awards, created in spring 2011, recognize nonelected public servants contributing to their communities and civic life, and collectively building a bright future for Arizona. The awards are named in honor of Gabe Zimmerman, whose life was taken in a mass shooting on January 8, 2011, while serving the citizens of Arizona as Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ Community Outreach Director.

Acknowledging and elevating nonelected public servants’ positive impact is essential to:

  • Promote civic health
  • Inspire talented individuals to consider careers in the public sector
  • Foster collaboration
  • Build public trust
  • Enhance the overall effectiveness of government

CFA is honored to recognize the following individuals as the 2023 Gabe Zimmerman Public Service Awardees: Mark McCall in Community Builder (Large County), Stephen J. Pauken in Community Builder (Small City/Town), Stephanie Zamora in Emerging Leader, Sherri Collins in Civic Leader, and, new this year, the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Joy Rich.
