Nonprofit Banner Health opened Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale, a comprehensive destination for sports-centered clinical services and performance-boosting programs.

The $54 million, three-story, 80,000 square-foot facility provides everything athletes need to reach peak athletic performance. The center offers access to top quality sports medicine services and professional performance analytics under one roof for injury prevention, repair and recovery, as well as technical analysis and custom programs. This includes everything from orthopedic, concussion and surgical care to physical therapy, performance training and sports psychology.

Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale is home to Banner Sports Medicine High Performance Center, a state-of-the-art sports analytics and training complex. It features roughly 17,000 square feet of indoor space that is complemented by a 29,000-square-foot outdoor training area suited for real-time, true-to-sport assessment and training. The center is Arizona’s most comprehensive collection for athletic training, diagnostic and monitoring systems, including the latest in force plate technology and motion capture camera systems capable of serving athletes across virtually all court, field and track sports.

“This is something special, and it’s the professionals that work here, not the bricks and mortar, that make it so special,” said Peter S. Fine, CEO of Banner Health, during a recent grand opening celebration. “It is one-of-a-kind for this state, and it flows from ideas by people who joined Banner for this reason and who trusted Banner to meet its commitments.”

Fine added, “We recognize there are complex medical, physical and mental needs in the world of sports and Banner is going to be the leader of sports medicine in this state because of the great people associated with this company and this project.”

One of the top physician leaders on the project is Dr. Evan Lederman, chief of Banner’s Orthopedic Sports Medicine program. He said, “Having everything under one roof provides value to patients and to their providers because we can take a team approach to help people get back to their optimal level of participation and perform at their highest level.”

Lisa Mukavitz, vice president of Service Lines for Banner Health, said during the grand opening celebration, “I’m proud and honored to be here today to celebrate the completion of this incredible project. Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale is new and innovative. Importantly, it is the manifestation of a vision of many, and we would not be standing here today without all of you.”

Mukavitz thanked the project’s many business, athletic and community partners, as well as numerous donors. “Because of your generous support we are able to expand and provide sports medicine services to our community, especially our youth athletes who deserve every opportunity to excel,” she said.

Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale is part of real estate development firm Alter Group’s Riverwalk at Talking Stick mixed-use development and is located on sacred Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) land.

Martin Harvier, president of SRPMIC, spoke at the grand opening celebration and said, “Walking up, I was struck by the beauty of this building and the cultural elements you see all around, which is very important to us as members of this community. I truly believe this facility will go hand-in-hand with what else has been developed here, such as Salt River Fields, our golf course and our commitment to youth sports. I’m excited about the opportunity for athletic excellence it’s going to give, especially for the young people, whose dreams are sometimes lost because of injury.”

The development is in strategic alignment with Banner’s partnerships with prominent local athletic teams, including Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, Arizona Coyotes, Tucson Roadrunners, University of Arizona, Phoenix Rising Youth Soccer Club and others.

Other partners on the project include Willmeng Construction, HKS Architects, Affiliated Engineers, Aspen Technologies, EPS Group, GK Flanagan Associates, Midstate Mechanical, Paul-Koehler Consulting Structural Engineers, Inc., and Wilson Electric.
