MIM has recently unveiled several newly designed exhibits, many with impressive additions. Located in the Europe Gallery, the new Signal Horns display (above) features a set of twelve diverse horns selected from MIM’s extensive collection. The exhibit helps illustrate the various types of instruments used for practical communication. Along with other “signaling” instruments on display, guests can see an early twentieth-century Belgian motorcar horn and an Acme siren horn made in Birmingham, England, that emulates the sound of a loud siren.
In the United States / Canada Gallery, the expanded R. Carlos Nakai exhibit includes several special flutes donated to MIM from Nakai’s personal collection. Another instrument gifted to MIM by the artist is a re-creation of a traditional eagle-bone whistle. The display celebrates the musician’s distinguished career and underscores his profound musical gift.
The Egypt exhibit is one of several enhanced displays in the Africa and Middle East Gallery. It now highlights an ‘ūd (below) in almost perfect condition made by famous luthier Khalil Ibrahim al-Jawhari, or “El Gohary,” in 1912.
