Phoenix-Area Restaurant among Winners in Discover’s $5 Million Commitment to Support Black-Owned Restaurants

Monroe’s Hot Chicken

Monroe’s Hot Chicken, a Black-owned restaurant in Phoenix, has won $25,000 from Discover’s Eat it Forward program.

Discover is giving 200 $25,000 awards to Black-owned restaurants across the country to help them bounce back from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproportionately impacted the Black community. The winners are randomly selected based on the public’s social media nominations — and it is notable that a local Phoenix eatery is among the winners!

Offering Nashville-style fried chicken sandwiches, Monroe’s Hot Chicken is a lunch staple for many in the Phoenix area. Amid recent focuses on the support for Black-owned businesses, Monroe’s Hot Chicken reported to Discover that they’ve seen a spike in traffic, which has helped support the restaurant in the wake of pandemic-related shutdowns.

“COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on businesses across the United States, and we want to help effect positive change by offering financial support to Black-owned restaurants, a segment of the economy that has been disproportionately impacted during this pandemic,” said Julie Loeger, Discover executive vice president and president of U.S. Cards. “Through this campaign, people across the country can support their favorite Black-owned restaurants. By sharing the names of these establishments on social media, it not only helps promote these businesses, but it also nominates them for a chance to receive $25,000.”

Weekly drawings began July 13, 2020, and the final drawing date will take place in November 2020. Through Oct. 31, 2020, consumers can go to Discover’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to nominate their favorite Black-owned restaurant, and 200 nominees will be randomly selected to receive $25,000. Official Rules for additional nomination and winner criteria are online at www.EatItForwardTerms.com.

Nominations can be made on the following social media platforms:
