Why is honoring achievement important? How does it impact our business community?
Honoring achievement matters because recognition does more than celebrate one person. It shows others what is possible. When we highlight leaders who are building businesses, creating jobs, strengthening communities and finding new ways to solve problems, we create examples for the next generation to follow.
Arizona’s business community is incredibly collaborative, and recognition helps bring people together who may not otherwise cross paths. Those connections can lead to partnerships, mentorship, new ideas and greater community impact.
I also believe achievement should be recognized not only by results but by how those results are accomplished. Leadership, integrity, innovation, resilience and a willingness to bring others along matter. When we celebrate those qualities, we help define the kind of business community we want Arizona to continue becoming
What is the single most important thing you have learned throughout your career that would inspire others/other women?
The most important thing I have learned is that you do not have to wait until you feel completely ready to step into an opportunity.
Some of the biggest growth in my career has come from saying yes, figuring it out and trusting that I could build the knowledge, team or strategy needed to succeed. Women can sometimes feel pressure to have every qualification or every answer before raising their hand. I have learned that leadership is often about having the confidence to move forward even when the path is not perfectly defined.
Be curious. Ask questions. Surround yourself with smart people. Work hard, but do not be afraid to think differently. Most importantly, do not underestimate the value of your own perspective. The ability to see an opportunity, act on it and bring people together around a vision can be just as powerful as having all the answers on day one.
What do you think we can do – now – to make a difference for young people/women in Arizona?
We can start by giving young people and women more access to the rooms where decisions, relationships and opportunities are created.
Mentorship is important, but sponsorship can be even more powerful. We should not only give advice. We should make introductions, recommend women for leadership opportunities, invite younger professionals into meaningful conversations and give them opportunities to take on work that stretches their abilities.
Arizona is growing quickly, which gives us an incredible opportunity to intentionally develop the next generation of leaders alongside that growth. Businesses can create internships, mentorship programs, leadership pathways and community partnerships that expose young people to careers and possibilities they may never have considered.
Sometimes one introduction, one opportunity or one person saying, “I think you can do this,” can change the direction of someone’s life. Those of us in leadership have the ability and responsibility to create more of those moments.
