In one of the largest community activations of its kind in Arizona, 280 interns from TSMC Arizona enlightened hundreds of youth from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley in STEM careers through immersive activities at the Arizona Science Center. The event is part of TSMC’s Arizona’s annual Community Involvement Day and reflects the company’s commitment to developing Arizona’s next generation of engineers, makers and innovators.
Also at the event, TSMC Arizona presented a $100,000 grant to advance STEM education at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley.
TSMC recruited the interns from dozens of American universities, including Arizona’s leading institutions. They will mentor youth as they discover how technology is shaping the future.
The event provided Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley youth the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of STEM from future engineers and innovators completing summer internships at TSMC Arizona in three immersive experiences. These included “Floor Exposure,” a hands-on activity designed to bring cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing to life, that sent youth on a scavenger hunt throughout the museum galleries to find pieces from a semiconductor display. The scavenger hunt was followed by a Q&A with TSMC Arizona interns. Another was “Dome Show,” in which participants traveled on an immersive 8k journey through the universe to explore how Light-Emitting Diodes, or LEDs, work and the role of semiconductors in the process.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are driving new discoveries and innovations, as well as the global economy. Careers in these high-demand fields are also a central focus of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley. The July 1 event will help close the STEM awareness gap and ignite interest in STEM careers, particularly among youth in under-resourced communities. Nationally, STEM jobs account for nearly one-quarter of the workforce, yet women and minorities remain significantly underrepresented in non-medical STEM fields.
