Steak 44 Acquires Durant’s, Plans Temporary Closure for Renovations

by Mike Hunter

Local steak lovers will see a temporary shake-up in their dining plans as Durant’s, a longtime favorite, has been acquired by the acclaimed Steak 44 and Ocean 44 restaurant group, by brothers Mike and Jeffrey Mastro, along with their father Dennis Mastro and business partner Scott Troilo. The transition will bring a fresh new era for the beloved establishment, but not without a brief closure for renovations.

Steak 44, known for its high-end dining experience and prime cuts, officially announced the purchase earlier this week. The Arizona-based steakhouse brand has built a strong reputation for offering top-tier steakhouse fare in an upscale yet welcoming atmosphere, making it a natural fit to take over Durant’s legacy.

“We are thrilled to continue the tradition of excellence that Durant’s has maintained over the years,” said a Steak 44 representative. “Our goal is to elevate the dining experience while preserving the charm and quality that loyal guests have come to expect.”

“Carol and I, Durant’s second generation, have been blessed through the years,” said Jack M. McElroy, current owner of Durant’s Steakhouse. “Now as Durant’s newest era begins, led by the extraordinary team of Jeff and Mike Mastro. With their leadership, and with the support of the Durant’s community that has walked through the famous backdoor for the last 75 years, we are confident that Jack Durant’s ‘Finest, Eating, and Drinking, Establishment in the World,’ will continue to be the place of celebration for the most important group in our hearts…our guests, our friends, … the Durant’s Family, as The Legend Continues.”

While specific details about the renovation timeline have not yet been released, the restaurant will close temporarily as the new ownership implements changes to align the space with its signature brand. Fans of Durant’s can expect an updated dining area, an enhanced menu, and the meticulous attention to quality that has made Steak 44 and Ocean 44 nationally recognized names in fine dining.

Durant’s opened its doors in 1950 and has been operated by the same family ownership for its entirety.  A Central Avenue staple for fine dining, the upscale and old-school steakhouse has been serving steak, seafood and martinis in its vintage red-velvet setting for more than 74-years.  About the same amount of time guests have been entering the restaurant through the famous kitchen’s back door.

When asked what it means to take over, Mike Mastro said, “to loosely quote Patek Philippe, you never own a legend like Durant’s, you simply look after it for the next generation. My family and I are thrilled with the acquisition and intend to bring a renaissance to this iconic steakhouse and expand its legendary status for generations to come.”

Local patrons have expressed both excitement and nostalgia at the news, with many eager to see how the new owners will honor the rich history of Durant’s while introducing a fresh, refined touch.

Steak 44 and Ocean 44 are high-end restaurants owned by the Mastro family, which is known for its success in the luxury dining industry.
