“Investing in our community is paramount to our mission of hosting a successful Super Bowl and leaving a positive lasting legacy long after the game is played,” said Jay Parry, president and CEO of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee. “The lifesaving work of Vitalant is critical for our community, and the bloodmobile will provide help to residents around the state.”
Vitalant supplies blood to every hospital in Maricopa County and 90% of the hospitals statewide. Daily personal emergencies and the ongoing medical needs of thousands of patients require a constantly available blood supply. Once a shortage occurs, medical professionals are forced with critical decisions for people in need.
“It is especially humbling to be honored with the Super Bowl Legacy Grant on Giving Tuesday,” said Sid Lewis, Vice President of the Vitalant Southwest Division. “The funding towards the purchase of a new bloodmobile will give Vitalant the resources to collect enough blood to help up to 200,000 patients. Each donor on the bloodmobile will be giving patients the chance to share another holiday with their loved ones.”
The Super Bowl Legacy Grant Program, presented by APS, PetSmart, Salt River Project (SRP), and The Thunderbirds, provides grants to local nonprofits with proven track records of benefiting underserved Arizonans. The program concentrates on four pillars: education, health and wellness, sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion and social justice. More than $2 million will be awarded to nonprofits across Arizona by February 12.
The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee is an Arizona nonprofit organization responsible for planning and executing a successful Super Bowl LVII in 2023. The goal of the Host Committee is to galvanize local stakeholders in a united approach to hosting the largest single-day sporting event in the world by maximizing positive media exposure, fueling the economic engine of Arizona, and leaving a lasting legacy. The Host Committee serves as liaison between the NFL and all regional efforts, culminating with the game in 2023 at State Farm Stadium, home to the Arizona Cardinals. This is the fourth time Arizona is hosting the Super Bowl, following 1996, 2008 and 2015. Only four other sites (South Florida, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Tampa Bay) hold this distinction.
Vitalant (“Vye-TAL-ent”) is the nation’s largest independent, nonprofit blood services provider exclusively focused on providing lifesaving blood and comprehensive transfusion medicine services for about 900 hospitals and their patients across the U.S. Every day, Vitalant needs to collect nearly 5,000 blood, platelet and plasma donations to help save lives.
