Waste Management Opens 50th Natural Gas Fueling Station

Waste Management — July 31, 2013

As Waste Management celebrates the opening of its 50th natural gas fueling station in Jackson, Miss., Waste Management of Arizona is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Clean N’ Green compressed natural gas fueling station in Mesa, Ariz. Located adjacent to Waste Management’s San Tan Hauling and Transfer Station, the CNG infrastructure also powers 38 Waste Management front-end loaders, side-loaders, rear-loaders and container trucks.

Considered one of the cleanest alternative fuels available for heavy-duty trucks in the transportation industry, CNG fuel became available when the facility opened in summer 2012 to Greater Phoenix municipalities, businesses and the public. Operated by PetroCard, the Mesa Clean ‘N Green fueling station, prices have become even more affordable since last year’s opening, dropping from $2.59 to the current rate of $2.40 GGE. The self-service Clean N’ Green Fuel station is open 24/7 and accepts Visa and MasterCard as well as fleet cards such as Wright Express, Fuelman, Voyager and Clean N’ Green.

Waste Management has been a pioneer and national leader in the use of natural gas for heavy-duty trucks since the 1990s. The company already operates more than 2,200 alternatively fueled vehicles with the largest fleet of natural gas collection trucks in North America. Of the company’s 50 fueling stations across North America, 18 are accessible to the public. The WM collection trucks use a slow-fill method, which carry approximately 70 diesel gallon equivalents of CNG – a capacity that allows them to run for 10 to 12 hours and complete a typical day’s waste or recycling collection route. The public-accessible fueling station, serving commercial and consumer vehicles, has fast-fill capability installed.

“As Waste Management’s CNG fleet and public fueling stations expand across North America, we are very pleased to power our WM San Tan fleet with CNG and, even better, to make CNG accessible in the southeast valley where there is no other CNG infrastructure,” said Scott Bradley, area vice president of Waste Management of Four Corners.

“Natural gas-powered collection trucks run cleaner and quieter, providing our customers and communities with a top-notch level of customer service and minimal impact on the environment,” said Bradley. Waste Management is dedicated to providing customers with outstanding service while doing business in a sustainable manner.
